I’m so so glad the Cavs didn’t advance in the NBA Cup
Full disclosure: I think the NBA Cup (sponsored by Emirates) is an abomination. The ghastly courts notwithstanding, it’s just so dumb.
I mean, I get why the NBA is doing it. The Emirates NBA Cup is supposed to add some spice to the regular season. Maybe the players like it.
But don’t take it from me:
“The Emirates NBA Cup (formerly the NBA In-Season Tournament) is the league’s annual in-season competition, which provides players and teams to chase another championship, engages fans in a new way and drives additional interest in the early portion of the regular-season schedule,” the NBA explains in an FAQ section on its website.
The tournament’s “knockout rounds” are currently underway. Here’s the irony: The teams that didn’t advance to the knockout rounds – like the Cavs – stand to benefit from getting eliminated early. They’re getting a much-needed week off.
The NBA season is a grind, and this almost feels like having another All-Star break.
The Cavs have been banged up, and they have aspirations of a deep postseason run – so you can have the NBA Cup. To whoever wins the Emirates NBA Cup this year, hoist it high and proudly. The Cavaliers don’t need it.
As a Cavs fan, it makes me very happy that these guys had a break to rest up, heal up, recharge, practice, strategize – whatever they needed to do.
It gave me a chance to unplug from Cleveland sports for a few days, although I’ve been hearing on 92.3 the Fan that Max Strus could be back Friday night. I’m sure it’s all over the internet, but I’m taking a break for another day.
Now that I think about it, I kind of like the NBA Cup.
